The Week that Was #13 – Through the Eyes of Improved Apps
A round up of things that the Improved Apps folk chat about over a cuppa coffee!
By Sophie Wyard – Marketing Manager @ Improved Apps
We’re a diverse bunch at Improved Apps and we enjoy sharing a story or two… our news… and views… over a cup of coffee or around the water cooler (and an occasional beer!)
So, we thought why not share a few of our newly discovered noteworthy news stories, fascinating facts, helpful hints, as well as the things that have made us smile or simply laugh out loud.
As our apps support the entire gamut of Salesforce users from sys admins to sales reps; from marketing managers to business analysts and from trainers to support staff, (and bearing in mind we’re all human), we hope that there is something of interest to everyone.
Solution Positioning – Top Tips for discussions with Prospects & Customers
I watched the TED talk by TED Curator Chris Anderson – ‘TED’s Secret to Public Speaking’.
There were some great take-aways from it that apply to conversations with prospects and customers:
Focus on one major idea – Explain it properly (less is more – Context is key!)
Give your audience a reason to care – Curiosity, Use questions
Build your idea bit by bit – Use their language
Make sure your idea is worth sharing – Believe in your idea, inspire change

Salesforce’s Benioff is brave to fight for social justice…
An interesting article from The Telegraph:
As a former secretary of state, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, and retired four-star US army general, Colin Powell has forged a reputation as one of America’s wisest elder statesmen.
So when a man of his stature has some advice to pass on, most people tend to take it on board. Not so, Marc Benioff, the colourful Silicon Valley billionaire.
Powell recently offered a few colourful words of wisdom to Benioff, the founder of cloud computing firm Salesforce, and one of America’s most outspoken businessmen: “Be careful how far you climb up the tree. It will expose your backside,” Powell warned.
He was referring to Benioff’s reputation as one of the country’s most passionate corporate social activists, speaking out on a range of big issues from gay rights to the gender pay gap.
The entrepreneur is part of a growing band of high-profile business figures who are increasingly using their influence to fight for social justice and political causes, as well as push for more widespread philanthropy. [read more]
‘Elementary my dear Watson’
AI is now seen as a critical driver for increasing profits – or at least cutting costs in choppy economic waters. But are the expectations realistic?…Take a look at this article from Financial Review – ‘Woodside expands IBM Watson artificial intelligence as tech takes centre stage.’
Woodside Petroleum has expanded its use of IBM’s Watson cognitive computing, which learns on the job, and upped its focus on digital initiatives as it seeks to drive more value out of systems across its sprawling operations. [read more]

We Celebrated National Limerick Day…Did you?
The folks at Improved Apps got quite carried away and became bards for the benefit, or not as the case may be, of National Limerick Day on 12 May…Here are a couple of our efforts that went out from @ImprovedApps on Twitter…
Diversity is a beautiful thing…
An uplifting piece, ‘House of One’ that shows our common humanity can bridge cultural divides to bring us together.
“We have noticed, as a community here in the middle of the city, that a lot of people want to meet people from different backgrounds and religions and that there is a strong desire to show that people from different religions can get along. We want to make a point and show that religions can be a cause of peace.”
